Choose the Box Style and Material
When customizing packaging boxes for the first time, you need to consider which style of box to choose. Although the ultimate purpose of different packaging boxes is to package products, the visual presentation and opening effect of different styles of packaging boxes are quite different.
You choose the box style based on your products and packaging concepts. For example, if the product is a small item like lipstick, eyebrow pencil, or candle, you can choose a paper card box, which meets our needs for convenient packaging and reduced costs. If the product is a larger item like perfume or cosmetic sets, you can choose a corrugated cardboard mailer box or different styles of hard boxes, such as magnetic boxes, lid and base boxes, or drawer boxes, depending on your needs. Once you’ve decided on the box style, you can then select the materials.
For paper card boxes, I recommend 350g coated paper because it’s easy and convenient to print on. If a thicker layer is needed, 400g coated paper is an option. For corrugated mailer boxes, you can choose E-flute corrugated paper, which is the most common type on the market and has good rigidity. You’ll also need to choose the surface paper; I recommend 250g powder-coated paper. Finally, for rigid boxes, the materials are greyboard and surface paper. I would recommend 1200gsm greyboard, and then you can choose the surface paper according to your needs. I will provide a detailed analysis of the materials for each type of box in the corresponding articles for each box type.
Choose the printing method that best suits your needs.
Once you’ve completed the preliminary preparations, you can then consider how to print on the paper. Typically, you only need to print the surface of your packaging and choose single-sided printing, as the blank other side needs to be glued to the grey board or corrugated cardboard. Even with paper card boxes, the inside remains blank and unprinted.
There are several printing methods, but generally you only need to consider digital printing and offset printing. Digital printing is suitable for small-batch packaging with high color accuracy requirements. It doesn’t require complicated operations, and the printed colors more closely match the computer files. Offset printing, on the other hand, is suitable for large-volume printing and is typically CMYK type printing. The disadvantage of digital printing is its slower speed. If you only need to produce one or 50 boxes, you can choose digital printing. If you need to produce hundreds or thousands of boxes, then you should choose offset printing.
The final step in printing is lamination, and you’ll need to choose the lamination method based on your needs. BOPP film is commonly used as the lamination material, and you can choose matte or glossy lamination, or a soft-touch or frosted finish. I will explain lamination in detail in an article that covers the process.
Make a Custom Box with Your Logo
Once printing is complete, you arrive at the final step: making a custom box with your logo. You’ll need to cut or die-cut the printed paper to fit the final box dimensions. If you’re making a rigid box, you’ll also need to v-cut the grey board. Finally, the box is manufactured based on your design and die-cutting drawings.
For paper card boxes, simply cut them according to the design or die-cutting pattern, then apply glue to the adhesive areas and bond them together. For corrugated cardboard boxes, you need to glue the surface paper onto the corrugated cardboard and ensure a secure bond before cutting the paper. For rigid boxes, you need to glue the surface paper onto the grey board and press it down.
